Difference Between Botox and Facial Filler Injections

What Is Botox?

Botox is a neuromodulator that affects how the facial muscles perform. The neurotoxin in Botox temporarily blocks nerve signals to the muscles, which can stop muscle contractions. This process is effective for dynamic muscles that create lines on the face. Some common wrinkles treated with Botox are frown and worry lines on the brow as well as crow’s feet around the eyes.

Facial Filler Treatments

Facial fillers work very differently than Botox. These products provide volume under the skin which can smooth lines and wrinkles, as well as contour the face. One of the most-used ingredients in dermal fillers is hyaluronic acid, which collects moisture under the skin. Facial fillers are commonly used to smooth smile lines or the nasolabial fold around the mouth/nose. They also can plump lips, smooth lips lines and add volume to the face.

Botox vs Facial Filler Treatment

Botox can be used for many cosmetic treatments that involve the facial muscles. Dynamic lines, neck cords and larger masseter muscles can be reduced with Botox. A Botox treatment can be performed in about 15 minutes, but the effects can require a week or longer to be apparent. Botox lasts about 3-4 months before the effects begin to wear off.

Facial fillers, especially hyaluronic acid-based fillers, can begin to work almost immediately. The treatment is quick, about 15-20 minutes, without any downtime needed. Depending on the product used, fillers can last for nine months or longer – some dermal filler treatments can provide results for two years or more.
